Being Andrew Lloyd Webber's new lyricist brought its own special challenges for Don. The media interest was intense; there was interview after interview, television and radio appearances. Not that Don was phased, this was not remotely as bad as what he had faced during his early days as a comedian.
Taking a line from Tell Me On A Sunday (‘no big song and dance’), Song And Dance was created. It opened to ecstatic reviews at the Palace Theatre on March 26 1982, where it remained for two years. The cleverest thing about the show was the balance. The first half was all intimacy and emotions, the second was flamboyance, glamour and pizazz.
